International Day of Forests celebrations, Fiji

His Excellency The President, Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konusi Konrote officiated at International Day of Forests at Sigatoka Valley High School in Nadroga. “As resource owners and guardians of our natural, beautiful and pristine beloved country, it is considered prudent and important that we better understand the important role that forests play in protecting our natural environment,” he said.

His Excellency noted that the gathering was the culmination of an almost three-month long tree-planting effort that began with the launch of Fiji’s 4 Million Trees in 4 Years Campaign in January this year, with tree planting programs undertaken in schools and communities across the country. “The relationship between people and forests has been critical to human development for all of recorded history.”

His Excellency was accorded a traditional welcome by the Mataqali Nawaicoba of the Vanua Nahehevia and planted a sandalwood tree, along with the Minster for Forests, Hon. Osea Naiqamu to symbolize the importance occasion.
